Our Story — Niralaya Farms
Two Friends. One Shared Dream. A Promise to Bring Tradition Back to Every Indian Home.
Some journeys begin with a business plan. Ours began with a friendship, a shared belief, and a simple question:
“If the finest traditional ghee can reach international markets, why should Indian families have to compromise on the quality of what they eat every day?”
This question became the beginning of Niralaya Farms.
We are two friends who met during our MBA days, coming from two very different professional worlds but sharing a common belief: that the food we bring into our homes should be made with honesty, care, and respect for its origins.
One of us came from a family already associated with the dairy business in the Gir region of Gujarat, a land deeply connected with the iconic Gir cow and generations of dairy farming traditions. Growing up close to the dairy business meant understanding that good food begins long before it reaches a kitchen. It begins with the people who care for the animals, the quality of the milk, the discipline of the process, and the responsibility of preserving what has been passed down through generations.
The other brought a different perspective: the experience of a marketing professional who understood how modern consumers discover brands, evaluate products, and decide whom to trust.
During our MBA journey, we often discussed the gap between traditional Indian food practices and the modern food marketplace. We saw beautifully packaged products, ambitious promises, and premium price tags. But we also understood that, for a consumer, the real question was much simpler:
What am I actually paying for, and can I trust what is inside the jar?
We decided to build a brand that would answer that question differently.
A brand where tradition would not merely be a marketing word. Where premium pricing would have a real explanation. And where transparency would be more than a sentence printed on a label.
That brand became Niralaya Farms.
Our Roots Are in Gir. Our Vision Belongs to the World.
Our journey begins in the Gir region of Gujarat, where our connection with the dairy business gives us a closer understanding of the people and processes behind our products.
For us, milk is not simply a raw material listed on a purchase invoice. It represents the beginning of a chain of responsibility that connects dairy farmers, traditional methods of preparation, careful packaging, and the family that eventually opens our jar.
We believe that a premium food brand must respect every link in this chain.
That is why our vision is to bring together the wisdom of traditional Indian food preparation and the standards expected by today's discerning consumers, both in India and in international markets.
We want Niralaya Farms to stand for something meaningful: the quality and transparency consumers deserve, with the heritage of Indian food traditions at its heart.
Our ambition is global, but our commitment to Indian consumers remains at the centre of everything we do.
Because we believe Indian families deserve access to products made with the same care, attention, and standards that a premium brand promises its customers anywhere in the world.
Why We Chose the Traditional Vedic Bilona Method
We could have built our brand around shortcuts. Instead, we chose to build it around a process.
Our A2 Gir Cow Ghee is prepared using the traditional Bilona method, a time-honoured approach to making ghee that involves preparing curd from milk, churning the curd to obtain makhan, and gently heating the makhan to produce ghee.
The process is more involved than simply processing cream into butter and converting it into ghee. It requires additional handling, time, labour, and attention at different stages.
For us, that traditional process represents a connection to the way food was prepared in many Indian households for generations.
First comes the milk. It is boiled and allowed to cool to the appropriate temperature before being cultured into curd. The curd is then traditionally churned to separate the makhan. Finally, the makhan is gently heated until it transforms into golden ghee.
Each stage matters because the product deserves care from beginning to end.
We do not believe tradition should be used merely to make a product sound expensive. We believe it should be reflected in the way the product is actually made.
That is the philosophy behind our Bilona ghee.
Not just a jar of ghee, but a process rooted in the food heritage we want to preserve.
Why Does Our Ghee Cost ₹2,900 Per Litre?
We understand that ₹2,900 per litre is a premium price.
We also understand that customers have every right to ask why.
In fact, we believe they should.
At Niralaya Farms, we do not want you to buy our ghee simply because the packaging looks premium, the story sounds emotional, or the price creates an impression of exclusivity.
We want you to understand the economics behind the product.
One of the most important factors in our costing is the quantity of milk required. Based on our current production costing, we account for approximately 30 litres of A2 Gir cow milk to produce one litre of ghee.
When you consider the milk requirement alone, you begin to understand why traditional ghee cannot be evaluated in the same way as an ordinary, mass-market cooking fat.
But we do not want you to take our word for it. Here is our current cost breakdown.
Our Open Costing — One Litre of Niralaya Farms Ghee
| Cost component | Calculation | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| A2 Gir cow milk | 30 litres × ₹80 per litre | ₹2,400 |
| Labour | Production and processing | ₹100 |
| Packaging | Jar, label and box | ₹100 |
| Delivery and logistics | Per kg, treated as approximately per litre for this estimate | ₹150 |
| Total estimated cost | ₹2,750 | |
| Our selling price | ₹2,900 | |
| Difference before other expenses | ₹150 |
Our milk costing uses a B2B purchase price of ₹80 per litre. For comparison, the retail milk price we reference is ₹110 per litre.
This distinction matters. Sourcing through a business relationship can provide a different purchase price from buying milk at retail rates, but the underlying quality and sourcing standards must still be maintained.
Our figures reflect the cost assumptions used in this calculation. Actual production costs may vary with milk prices, yield, batch size, packaging choices, and delivery requirements.
What Does This Mean for You?
Our estimated direct cost is ₹2,750 per litre, against a selling price of ₹2,900.
That leaves a difference of ₹150 per litre before any expenses not included in the above calculation, such as marketing, payment gateway charges, website operations, administration, applicable taxes, and other overheads.
In other words, ₹150 is not necessarily our final profit.
We share this because we believe customers should be able to distinguish between the cost of making a product and the amount a business ultimately earns.
Our intention is not to convince you that every rupee of our price goes directly into the product. It is to show you the principal costs behind our current pricing and allow you to make an informed decision.
We want your trust to come from understanding, not from blind faith.
A Premium Product Should Offer More Than Premium Packaging
When you choose Niralaya Farms, we want you to look beyond the jar.
Look at the milk that goes into the process. Look at the traditional method we have chosen to follow. Look at the labour involved in making the product. Look at the packaging that protects it, and the effort required to bring it to your doorstep.
Most importantly, look at the responsibility that comes with asking a customer to pay a premium price.
We know that many families compare the cost of ghee across brands. Some prioritise affordability, while others look for specific sourcing practices, traditional preparation, traceability, and a closer connection with the people behind their food.
We respect those choices.
Niralaya Farms is for customers who value traditional Bilona preparation and want greater visibility into how their food is sourced, produced, and priced.
We do not believe that a premium product should demand trust without offering reasons for it.
We believe that trust should be earned through consistency, honest communication, and the willingness to answer questions.
That is the relationship we want to build with every customer.
From an Indian Dairy Tradition to International Ambitions
India has a rich heritage of dairy-based foods and traditional preparation methods. We believe these traditions deserve thoughtful representation in today's global marketplace.
Our vision for Niralaya Farms is to bring the story of Indian ghee to customers across borders while continuing to serve the Indian households that have always been connected to these food traditions.
International markets often demand careful attention to documentation, product specifications, packaging, labelling, and applicable regulatory requirements. We see these requirements as an opportunity to build a more disciplined and transparent business.
Wherever our products are offered, we want our customers to have clear information about what they are buying and the standards applicable to that product.
We also believe that Indian consumers should not have to look overseas to find products made with care and presented with confidence.
Our dream is simple: to take the heritage of Indian food traditions to the world, while bringing world-class attention to quality back to Indian homes.
Our Promise: Tradition, Transparency and Responsibility
At Niralaya Farms, we want our brand to be measured by more than the words on our website.
We want our sourcing claims to be supportable. We want our production process to reflect the method we describe. We want our product information to be clear, and we want our customers to be able to ask questions about our costs and practices.
Where applicable, we aim to support our commitments through appropriate documentation, batch-level testing, traceability, and compliance with the regulations governing the markets in which we operate.
We believe transparency is not about claiming perfection. It is about being accountable for what we say and continuously working to meet the standards we promise.
We know that trust takes time to build. Every jar we sell is another opportunity to earn it.
Two Friends. One Belief. Your Trust.
When we first imagined Niralaya Farms, we did not want to create just another premium food label.
We wanted to bring together two worlds: the practical knowledge of a family dairy business in Gir, Gujarat, and the modern thinking of a marketing professional who believed a traditional product could be presented with greater clarity and accountability.
Our MBA college brought us together. Our shared belief gave us a direction. And our respect for traditional food preparation helped us choose the product with which to begin our journey.
Today, that journey continues with every batch we prepare and every customer who chooses to bring our ghee into their home.
We know that a jar of ghee is a small part of a family's life. It may find its way into a warm roti, a bowl of dal, a festive sweet, or a recipe passed from one generation to another.
We do not take that place in your kitchen lightly.
We want Niralaya Farms to become a name you choose because you understand our process, appreciate our approach, and believe our product deserves a place in your home.
Not because we ask you to trust us blindly, but because we give you reasons to trust us.
Niralaya Farms — Rooted in Tradition. Guided by Transparency. Made for Homes That Value Quality.
Thank you for being part of our journey.
Two friends began with a question. We are building a brand around the answer.
And we hope that, one jar at a time, you will become part of our story too
